Police Oracle: Debate on prostitute killings
A conference looking at ways to protect prostitutes is to be addressed by a vicar from Ipswich, scene of last year’s serial prostitute killings. The Rape, Race and Prostitution Conference, in London, will examine how women could be better protected by changes to the justice system. It will also consider women who are the victims of rape and racism. The conference is part of International Women’s Month and has been organised by the Global Women’s Strike.
Among the speakers will be the Rev Andrew Dotchin and some other residents from Ipswich, where five prostitutes were killed last year. The conference will host the launch of the Safety First Coalition, which will campaign for the decriminalisation of prostitution. Speakers will also discuss conviction rates for rape and racist attacks on women.
Spokeswoman Niki Adams said the conference would allow sex workers and victims of rape and racism to discuss justice issues with political and community leaders.
She said: “This is a chance for women who might never otherwise speak publicly to compare their experiences and talk to others who they are not normally able to speak to.
“We want to identify what is standing in the way of women getting justice, and who can help us.” said the conference would allow sex workers and victims of rape and racism to discuss justice issues with political and community leaders.
