In 2019, a group of 261 sex workers from different backgrounds and nationalities, took a case (M.A and others v. France) against the French Prostitution Act to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) claiming that the law seriously endangers the physical and mental integrity and health of individuals engaged in prostitution.
The group of sex workers bringing the case are associated with STRASS, the sex workers union in France and all lawfully engage in prostitution on a regular basis.
The ECHR recognised the threat to sex workers’ safety and well-being and ruled the case “admissible”. This in itself is a significant victory as only 5% of cases brought to the ECHR are deemed admissible.
On July 25th, 2024, the ECHR will announce its decision, which holds significant importance for the living and working conditions of sex workers.
